Japan agency of Maritime Education and Training for Seafarers (JMETS) has been working research and development on effective improvement of the multimedia communication between ship and land since 2000. Based on this research and development, we have been improving operation and equipment of mobile-phone data communication service on a training ship.
We focused on MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator) service as low-cost communication because mobile data communication by using roaming service is expensive in overseas. Therefore, We used a prepaid SIM card provided by MVNO for data communication on a training ship to verify of the possibility and effectiveness at the point of reduction of communication cost.
As a result, We had confirmed on effectiveness by using prepaid SIM card provided by MVNO on mobile-phone data communication service in overseas.
