The protection of the resource "land" is certainly one of the most important issues of the 21st century. Due to city spreading virgin land becomes increasingly rare. It is therefore necessary to recycle used land. Land recycling is, however, a complex task with many different disciplines involved. In this paper some of the key aspects are discussed and one example from Europe is given to illustrate how urban land recycling can be both economically successful and in line with the notion of a sustainable development as formulated in the Rio Convention.
