Cholesterol esterase activity of reproductive endocrine organs of essential fatty acids-deficient rats was successively investigated in deficiency.
Generally, the activity of cholesterol esterase systems in these organs was gradually reduced in deficiency. A significant decrease in activity of an adrenal esterifying cholesterol esterase system, both male and female, was observed in about 20 days of deficiency. Though a decrease in activity of testicular and ovarian esterifying cholesterol esterase systems was observed in about 40 days of deficiency, its depressed rate was far less than that of the adrenals. After about 60 days of deficiency the activity of esterifying cholesterol esterase systems in the adrenals and testicles showed nearly zero level.
The physiological significance of these changes was discussed.
