Despite the reported high incidence of miscarriage among the female employed workers, nosystematic attempt has been made to find out the factors relevant to the miscarriage among them. A self-administered questionnaire survey of 2, 100 female laborers comprising clerical workers, school teachers, hospital-nurses and nursery-nurses in and around the City of Sendai was carried out on their health and labor conditions. Six hundred and four women who had pregnant history were asked to answer detailed 10 questions on their labor conditions during their first pregnancy. They were also asked on their outcome of the first pregnancy whether it was live-birth or miscarriage. The incidence of miscarriage among them was 12.7% of their pregnancies. The clerical workers has significantly low incidence of miscarriage (7.6%) compared with that of nursery-nurses (18.2%) and of school teachers (16.0%). Standing posture in work and frequent lifting of heavy weight were related to miscarriages. Shift of pregnant employees to light work had an effect to lower the incidence of miscarriage. Use of maternity leave system before parturitlon also had an effect to support successful delivery, however 80% of the total miscarriages took place in the time perlod when the female workers were not able to apply legally this leave system. Sufficient rest in their home and nutritional consideration are relevant to low incidence of miscarriage.
