Abstract
It is necessary to understand the residential preferences of households with damaged homes to calculate the need for public housing following a disaster. Since preferences change over time, it is important to analyze trends in preference changes. The purpose of this research is to show changes in preferences of households in Mashiki temporary housings following the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake. We analyze the preferences change and its factors using pseudo panel data (N=1,068) of two surveys conducted on June to November 2016 and on July 2017. We found that aged single household tended to change their preference to public housing. From November to December 2017, we conducted interviews in 16 households for which preferences had changed. We demonstrated several factors for these changes, including anxieties over household finances and the ground under their housing.
