University students, who are at a stage of achieving independence, have increased opportunities to choose their own lifestyle habits. However, irregular daily routines often lead to unhealthy habits, resulting in various health issues. Improving university students’ health literacy is an urgent task.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the current state of health literacy among Chinese university students and to clarify its related factors. The research design was a cross-sectional study. It investigated the relationship between health literacy and attitudes toward health education classes, health knowledge, subjective health perception, and lifestyle habits among 262 university students. The results revealed that health literacy among Chinese university students has not been adequately developed. Furthermore, correlation analysis showed that health literacy scores among Chinese university students were significantly associated with their attitudes toward health education, health knowledge scores, subjective health perception, and lifestyle habits scores related to nutritional balance and meal quantity. Additionally, multiple regression analysis indicated that subjective health perception was most strongly associated with overall health literacy. Therefore, it is inferred that enhanced health literacy promotes health behaviors, improves subjective health perception, and ultimately leads to improved quality of life throughout one’s lifetime.
Based on the results of this study, it is considered that health education in China is extremely fragile. It also became clear that the number of health education class hours and the content of health learning are insufficient and lack systematicity. Therefore, it is considered necessary to enhance health education classes up to the high school level in order to cultivate health literacy among Chinese university students.
