The Pulse Shockwave Dryer System using HYPULCON (Pultech Corporation) is one of the drying technologies in normal pressure. HYPULCON, a unique dryer system, generates pulse shock waves with its pulse engine, effectively drying samples by separating the solids and liquids by the shock waves and the heat. In this study, we tried to prepare solid dispersions of naproxen as a model poorly water-soluble drug and improve its dissolution property by using this machine as a new pharmaceutical technology. KollicoatIR (IR), Kollidon30 (K30), Kollidon VA64 (VA64), Dextrin (DEX), Lactose (LAC), and Mannitol (MAN) were selected as carriers. The physicochemical properties of particles were investigated and compared with those of particles prepared with a spray dryer (SPD) and physical mixture (PM).
Powder X-ray diffraction and DSC evaluation showed that solid dispersions were formed with K30, VA64, DEX and LAC as carriers in Pulse systems using HYPULCON. The dissolution property was most improved in the LAC Pulse system. As a result of a compression test, it was clear that all pulsed particles showed excellent compressibility compared with PMs.
It was proved that the pulse shockwave dryer system can be used to prepare fine particles with improved dissolution properties and high compressibility without using any organic solvent.
