Swallowing difficulties, particularly in elderly patients, can significantly impair medication adherence and increase health risks, including aspiration pneumonia and gastrointestinal injuries. Deglutition aid jellies have been developed to facilitate medication intake in patients with swallowing difficulties. This study assessed the impact of various commercially available deglutition aid jellies on drug dissolution profiles across a wide range of pharmaceutical formulations and active pharmaceutical ingredients, including orally disintegrating tablets, enteric-coated tablets, sugar-coated tablets, granules, and powders. Drug dissolution tests were conducted under multiple conditions, using dissolution media with varying pH levels, following methods outlined in the Japanese Pharmacopeia and the Japanese Orange Book. The results showed that the tested deglutition aid jellies had minimal impact on drug dissolution profiles, with dissolution rates consistently meeting the standards specified in the Japanese Pharmacopeia and the Japanese Orange Book under all tested conditions. While minor statistical differences were observed in some cases, the variability was minimal and did not affect the overall suitability of the dissolution profiles. These findings strongly support the safety and practicality of deglutition aid jellies in enhancing medication adherence in patients with swallowing difficulties.
