Hemorrhage is one of the most troublesome complications encountered after the needle biopsy of parenchymatous organs. The situation would be the most serious to the patients maintained on hemodialysis, because they are repeatedly heparinized.
To overcome the difficulty, a new technique has been contrived with the use of plastic adhesives.
The materials and procedure are as follows;
1) Parenchymatous organs are biopsied using Vim-Silverman needle with an external tube for guide (Teflon).
2) After biopsy, only the Vim-Silverman needle is removed leaving the external tube in place.
3) Inserting an internal tube for injection through the external tube, iso-butyl or ethyl cyanoacrylate is applied into the bleeding point.
This procedure was found to be effective in stanching oozing blood from parenchymatous organs such as kidney, liver, spleen, and pancreas.
As for efficacy of the two adhesives used, there was little difference when applied to normal animals, however, iso-butyl cyanoacrylate was found superior to ethyl cyanoacrylate under heparinized condition.
