Abstract
The artificial liver support system using charcoal hemoperfusion, cuprophan membrane hemodialysis and plasma exchange using cellulose acetate hollow fiber (CAHF) has been developed and applied to patients with acute hepatic failure. 7 out of 35 patients with fulminant hepatic failure and all 5 patients with acute fatty liver of pregnancy were survived. Even in fatal cases of fulminant hepatic failure, the prolongation of survival time was shown to be possible by daily repeated charcoal hemoperfusion and plasma exchange. These clinical results indicated that this system daily repeated with charcoal hemoperfusion and plasma exchange were effective in treatment of acute hepatic failure.
