Abstract
knee prosthesis with hinge type is indicated for the cases of proximal end of tibia or distal end of femur occupied by large bone tumors, especially giant cell tumor of bone, in order to expect good function. We have developed total hinged knee prosthesis with low friction device since eight years before as acrylic and metallic ones were failed at breakage and material with much debris. In the follow-up study of cases treated with the latest total hinged knee prosthesis with low friction device, extension lag, infection, and poor range of motion are seen in many cases of proximal end of tibia in comparison with distal end of femur. The reason why such a different result between them takes place is that more frequent infection caused in trauma in the proximal end of tibia, becuase of less quantity of soft tissue, less resection of joint surface in the case of tumor in the distal end of femur, problem concerning reattachment of patellar ligament and so on. We have to noticefy that there are many problems on the case treated with hinged total knee prosthesis for bone tumor in the proximal end of tibia.
