The Sm2Fe17N3 magnet is regarded as one of the most prominent magnets because of its high magnetic energy density, a high magnetic anisotropy and a high Curie temperature. However, the low rate of N2 absorption by Sm2Fe17 is one of the serious problems in the actual production of the nitride magnet. In this study, we summarize recent results of kinetic study of the N2 absorption by Sm2Fe17 and point out several significant factors to be considered such as the dissociation process of N2 molecules, the formation of different nitride phases Sm2Fe17N2 and Sm2Fe17N3 on the alloy surface during N2 absorption, the diffusivity of the N atoms depending upon grain size of the alloy and internal stresses. These factors should be taken into account in the actual production.
