When the upper part of the floral glumes are clipped after anthesis, allowing for the caryopsis to grow up unrestricted by the floral glumes, the mature grains become longer than untreated grains. This type of unbalance between the length of floral glumes and caryopsis seems to be a varietal characteristic. Varieties with high degree of unbalance tended to produce notched grains or hull-cracked grains.
