Local adaptation of sugar beet varieties, especially new varieties bred by Branch of Japan Sugar Beet Institute, was studied through examining the results of performance tests carried out in two districts in the warmer region of Japan and in three districts in Hokkaido. High correlation was recognized between earliness of root development and sugar yield in the warmer region and in Northern Hokkaido. The local adaptation of newly-bred varieties was discussed in relation to the conditions of locations of performance tests, breeding stations and to the genecological classification of sugar beet varieties.
