Comparative studies were made by SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis on the erythrocyte membrane of rats which were bred with vitamin E deficient nutrition (V. E. D. N.) for six months (E0), with 1.5% cholesterol nutrition (C.N.) for two months after V. E. D. N. for six months (E1), with V. E.D.N. for one and half month (E2), with V. E. D. N. plus 1.5% of C. N. for six months (EC) and with normal nutrition for six or_eight months (N).
Abnormal spectrins (band 1' or band 2') which have never been found in normal erythrocyte membrane, were detected in the rats of E0 group, but, not in E1, E2 and EC.
Therefore, it is highly conceivable that the appearance of the abnormal spectrins are keenly related to hemolysis in vitamin E deficient rats. And these abnormalities were normalized by breeding with C. N.
