Abstract

The Philippines continues to face challenges in maintaining its national bridge network due to increasing traffic demands, exposure to harsh environmental conditions, and limited technical manpower. Engineers typically conduct routine inspections, while maintenance foremen and laborers remain underutilized despite being constantly present on site. Building upon the Simple Bridge Inspection Check Sheet developed by Wakana Asano and applied in Hirata Village, Japan, this research focuses on adapting, using, and localizing the approach within the Philippine context. This study aims to develop a practical Bridge Routine Inspection Check Sheet that allows non-engineering personnel to perform systematic visual inspections. The tool incorporates standardized defect codes and severity classifications to improve defect identification and documentation. This approach supports early maintenance interventions, complements engineers’ roles, and strengthens maintenance workers’ involvement towards a sustainable bridge maintenance system.
