Abstract
Recently, new transportation calming measure called “Shared Space” was attracted attention in European countries. It was said that in the space being applied “Shared Space”, communication such as eye-contact between road users often increased, and they had a tendency to give their way to others. Therefore, it was said that Shared Space will be a cause for reduction of traffic accidents. However these causal relationship does not show quantitatively yet. In this study, authors conducted an observational survey to measure existence of communication between road users such as eye-contact and salute. Then authors tried to test the relationship quantitatively between the communications and cooperative behavior such as reducing vehicle's speed. The results indicated that cooperative behaviors were caused by communication between road users significantly, and it was indicated the lower vehicle's speed was, the more communication and cooperative behavior occurres.
