Abstract

In civil engineering planning and public policy, dialectical discussions need to be repeated under the condition that freedom of speech is guaranteed. However, "political correctness (PC)", the concept of social psychological phenomena, may hinder them. In this research, we define a PC as “a criterion of value that is socially recognized as not necessarily justified in principle, but as correct in the age, which is used to impose on others”. In order to understand the basic characteristics of PC, we conducted a questionnaire survey. As a result of the analysis, the result suggests that having an attitude of humidity and one's own value criteria without sticking to abstract logic or reasoning may reduce the degree of PC, and to do so, it is expected that psychological strategies such as providing facts and the communication method will be effective.
