Although masonry is an important element of traditional and cultural landscapes, each municipality has its policies and methods for the restoration of damaged masonry and must be dealt with on a site-by-site basis. This study examines the restoration of masonry in municipalities with rural areas affected by the 2012 torrential drops of rain in northern Kyushu (Ukiha City, Kurume City, Yame City, Imari City, Takeo City, Isahaya City, and Omura City), and the restoration of masonry in municipalities with important cultural landscapes (Buzen City, Karatsu City, Nagasaki City, Hirado City, and Ojika Town). The purpose of this study is to clarify the actual state of restoration of masonry in the municipalities with important cultural landscapes through interviews with staff and field surveys. As a result, the following points were pointed out: 1) the review of the standards to promote the restoration of masonry, 2) the effectiveness of the system for the restoration of masonry and the issues to be solved, 3) the actual situation of the restoration of empty masonry in important cultural landscapes, and 4) the measures to deal with the issues surrounding important cultural landscapes.
