As the first step to investigate the cutting mechanism of composite materials, indentation model of glass fiber reinforced plastic by wedge indenters was accomplished to simplify the relation between tool and work-piece in cutting. The main results obtained are as follows: 1) On the different deformation mechanism with change in various wedge angles, there is a mixed type with compression and bending except for the cutting mechanism and compression type which is proposed by Mulhearn et al. in the case of metals. 2) As for the failure pattern of fibers in the unidirectional glass fiber reinforced plastic, the inclination angle of fibers (α) to the plane surface of materials gives more effective influence than the wedge angle (2θ). 3) In the compression-type mechanism, yarn appears to buckle into helical shapes.
