To explore the narrative development in short animations from the perspective of academic and industry experts, this study adopts the following research objectives: (1) to understand the factors of short animation narratives based on a narratological analysis; (2) to identify, define the affinities of creating short animation from the perspectives of academic and industry experts and examine their correlations; (3) to establish and analyze conceptual maps of academic and industry experts. Through the processes of focus group discussion, individual in-depth interview, and interactive qualitative analysis, the conceptual maps depicting the context of experts' thoughts are developed. The experts agree that the target audience and core values (two of the eight affinities identified) are driving factors for the creation of short animation narratives. The divergent cognitions on character function(s) and production management in creating short animation need further investigation.
