A portable liquid chromatograph was prepared as an educational tool for facilitating the connection between actual separation behavior and chromatographic theory. This equipment included a transparent glass chromatographic column and a flow cell for absorbance detection connected downstream of the column. When dyes were used as the solutes for separation, this equipment enabled simultaneous and continuous observation of the image of solutes migrating in the glass column and the chromatogram being measured on the same screen by using a USB camera. It was suggested that some of the movies produced using this equipment would be useful in helping students understand the theory of chromatography through the relationship between the migration of solutes through a chromatographic column and the corresponding chromatogram.
