Abstract
The term design, which now admits of wider interpretation, can be taken in three ways : 1) the art of making drawings or moldings in a conventional manner, 2) a new and broader use of design in the marketing process and 3) the equivalent to a conception or project. In light of the broadened sense of the word and the increasing number of people engaged in the field, design education must duly be conducted at university as well as at art college. I have experience in giving lectures on design not merely to the freshmen of the department of Kansei Engineering but to other students pursuing a course of general education in Shinshu university. In this paper I would like to introduce the contents and outcomes of my lectures and present the essential points of design education for university students and what its future direction should be.
