In this paper, I examine the principles and aims of the International Family Year and the tasks of health and medical sociology in Japan. The tasks of health and medical sociology are to study home-care services and to research family support networks and family support policies, in collaboration with medical and social policy sciences. In contemporary Japan, family support policies become more important part of the welfare policy.
