Samples of the Sm2Fe17 alloy were exposed to hydrogen or nitrogen gas compressed to pressures between 1. 0 and 1. 5 GPa. Sample hydrogenated at 1000C and 1. 12 GPa (H2) pulverized completely but the crystalline structure did not differ from that obtained during hydrogenation at 1 MPa where pulverization does not occur. Nitriding reaction carried out at 3500C and 1. 0 GPa resulted in transition into nitride Sm2Fe17N3. The disproportionation of sample has occurred under high nitrogen pressure when heated at 6000C.
