This study aims to identify the research issues by examining the concept of “intellectual expertise” proposed by Koike(1999, 2001) in terms of the theories of expertise, experiential learning, and organizational learning. The following research topics were presented. First, I proposed to integrate a four-level model of intellectual expertise with Dreyfusʼs (1983) five-step model. Second, intellectual expertise can be classified into “exploitative expertise” and “explorative expertise”, from the viewpoint of organizational learning theory. Third, it is necessary to examine the skills and capabilities of intellectual expertise in terms of experiential learning and reflection. Fourth, the concept of developmental challenge can be re-conceptualized by Koikeʼs (2001) suggestions on “extent and depth of experience.” By exploring these research topics, we can extend the theory of intellectual expertise from the viewpoint of expertise, experiential learning, and organizational learning.
