Taihu Lake Basin is located in the center of the Yangtze Delta, east part of China. It is one of the most prosperous areas in China. The Taihu Basin Authority is in charge of the basin on behalf of the Ministry of Water Resources. There are three factors that make Taihu Lake flood management a challenging task: One is complicated flood drainage system, the second one is difficulty in finding flood retarding area, and the third one is uncertainty of keeping flood flow as water resources. The inflows and outflows of the lake are modeled to simulate different scenarios of flood drainage in order to figure out their impacts on flood duration and water resources protection. The results can be used for future improvements of flood management in the Taihu Lake Basin.
