The effect of diode laser irradiation on the mitogenic proliferation of cultured human lymphocytes was examined. DNA synthesis of the lymphocytes was inhibited by laser irradiation at a low energy fluence and enhanced at a higher energy fluence.
The results suggest that low-watt laser irradiation can interfere with the immune response in vitro. Similar interference might occur in patients with rheumatoid arthritis subjected to laser therapy.
