Six patients were reveiwed at an average period of 29 years (range, 26 to 29) after Watson-Jones tenodesis was performed for chronic instability of the ankle. Four patients were symptom-free. The remaining 2 complained of slight dull pain after walking a long way. One patient had suffered reinjury after 17 years. But the clinical results of this operation were completely satisfactory. Radiographic examination revealed that talar tilt and anterior drawer movement were controlled successfully in all cases. But degenerative change was seen in one. Based on the findings in this study, we conclude that Watson-Jones procedure will restore good long-term function in patients who are disabled by chronic ankle instability.
