In Japan, C.D.H. and acetabular dysplasia of the hip are major causes of osteoarthritis of the hip. Various operative treatments are performed on such cases in order to manage their symptoms and to prevent development of secondary osteoarthritis. We have been doing rotational acetabular osteotomy for these. Follow-up studies were undertaken on 16 hips in 15 cases, 2 males and 13 females. The age of the patients at the time of operation ranged from 14 to 43 with an average of 27.9. The average follow-up period was 33.6 months.
The clinical results were evaluated according to the J.O.A. hip scoring system. The postoperative results of the cases with precoxarthritis and early stage of osteoarthritis were satisfactory but those of the cases with an advanced stage of osteoarthritis were not. The follow-up X-rays indicated an improvement of the femoral head coverage and a decrease of tilting angle of the acetabular weight-bearing area.
