Recently the treatment for pseudoarthroses and delayed unions using electrical stimulation and electromagnetic fields is being performed in Japan as well as in several other countries. Since 1979 we have had high healing rates with therapeutically resistant diseases-not only infectious but also uninfectious ones-using the minute alternating current electrical stimulator ‘AC-STIM’.
Here we report a case that was infected at the ankle after an operation for intra-arthrical luxation fracture. In spite of receiving four operations and the use of several different antibiotics, bone union was not achieved until application of the AC-STIM with bone transplantation after curettage at the infected lesion. Nine weeks after this there was bone union. In the ten months since the AC-STIM was taken off, there have been no infectious findings with this case. The mechanism of anti-bacterial effect and bone formation by electrical stimulation has not yet been elucidated.
We also made a survey of the problems with his treatment given in the literature.
