The effect of laser irradiation on acid resistance of the fissures of human molars was histologically examined.
The fissures of the extracted third molars were exposed to continuous wave Nd: YAG laser The irradiation conditions were output power of 3 watts, spot size of 2mm and irradiation time of 0.1 second.
The lased enamel surfaces of the fissures showed no gross change after exposure to the demineralizing culture system. But the unlased enamel showed caries-like cavity formation.
The results suggest that c. w. Nd: YAG laser irradiation on the fissures of human molars may be effective for the prevention of dental caries.
