The goggles protect eye from the laser light. But, we are tender to remove goggles because of a feeling of unpleasantness such as sweat, restraint and darkness of viewing. It become a solution for darkness of view if absorbance of goggles change by detect of laser light automatically. Liquid crystal (LC) can control to transmit or shut the light by electric field changing. At present time, such a LC is applied as goggles for welding. The aim of this investigation is examined that LC filter can utilize as goggles for a laser safety. Following experiments on LC were carried out: 1. Absorbance measurement 2. Response time measurement 3. Shock wave measurement.
Minimum absorbance was 0.7 with 540nm on “off”state of LC. Absorbance of “on”state became high as a value of 3.5 over the whole visible wavelength. Response time of LC filter was observed with 320μs. The shock wave wasn't observed by “on”state at all. Results suggested that LC can utilize as goggles for a laser light, if response of LC are improved.
