Influence of cold exposure alone and that in combination with the loading of other factors (combined exposure) such as unilateral nephrectomy +salt aministration, underfeeding, excess muscular exercise on the living body was studies on rabbits by the histopathological investigation of their adrenal, liver, kidney and heart.
1. Changes observed on the adrenal were the hypertrophy of the cortex except in the group received combined exposure in which case atrophy was observed instead in both short term (12 days) experiment group and relatively long term (40 days) exneriment group.
2. Changes observed on the liver were strongest in the groups received cold exposure combined with excess muscular exercise followed by the groups of cold exposure combined with under feeding, unilateral nephrectomy+salt and the group received cold exposure alone in the order listed. At any rate, however, the changes observed on the animal received combined exposure were stronger than those on the animal received cold exposure alone. Appearance of fat was recognized on the animal of short term (12 days) experiment, while it was absent on the animal of long term (40 days) experiment.
As for glycogen, it was observed to have diminished on the animal of short term experiment, but this was restored to normal on the animal of long term experiment.
3. Changes observed on the kidney were marked on the renal tubules rather than on the glomeruli resembling to the descriptions of Suwa's socalled interstitial nephritis.
4. On the heart, fibers of the cardiac muscle were seen to have swollen being thickly stained to eosin. Perinuclear clear halo was recognized when these changes had advanced.
5. Generally speaking, the combination of cold exposure enhanced all the changes and there was a tendency to level out the changes of various organs.
