Studies were performed on the distribution of fetal hemglobin in infants and children with healthy and pathological conditions employing Betke's staing method.
Over ninety per cent of red blood cells contained fetal hemoglobin in peripheral blood at birth, decreasing thirty per cent at three months of age and reached below one per cent after three years. The rate of fetal hemoglobin at birth seemed to be related to the dulation of gestation and lasting their synthesis about eight weeks after birth.
In the pathological condition, the appearance of fetal hemoglobin showed different tendency due to the type of diseases. However, elevated fetal hemoglobin levels were notice in the anemic condition including aplastic anemia and hemolytic anemia. A varried results were obtained in the subjects with congenital anomaly depending upon thier types.
In a malignant disease, highest level of fetal hemoglobin were seen in the stem cell leukemia.
