In this study waste lignocellulosic sawdust was converted to value added water soluble carboxymethylcellulose(CMC). Process conditions were varied to get the optimum parameters for the foarmation of CMC. Effect of all the parameters were studied on degree of substitution (DS) of CMC. With the optimized set of conditions, highest DS of 0.5 was obtained. Transition in the surface morphology was studied by SEM. CMC showed lower degree of crystallinity which was studied by X-ray diffraction.
