Due to energy utilization from waste and biomass last several decades, the fraction of waste and biomass energy covers around 80% of renewable energy in Korea. However usable biomass amount is limited in Korea and so in order to satisfy bio-energy supply plan given by the government, stable biomass supply and technology development applied are essential. Therefore, to achieve energy security of Korea relative to biomass, we have to develop the biomass to energy technologies about not only domestic usable biomass but also inexpensive raw material securable from Southeast Asia nations like Malaysian and Indonesia. In this study, lab-scale fast pyrolysis system with BFB (Bubbling Fluidized Bed) type was tested to treat 1 kg/hr of EFB (Empty Fruit Bunch) from palm industry. The characteristics of EFB were investigated with elemental analysis, proximate analysis, heating value, component analysis, apparent density, and yields of oil, gas and char at different temperature and residence time.
