In orthodontics, by applying a correcting force to the target tooth using a brace, reaction occurs in the periodontal tissue at the root of the tooth and the tooth is moved. A tooth to be moved generates a reaction force around the cone of the tooth and produces stresses, but it is very difficult to know the 3 dimensional actual stress distribution. So, we make a finite element model which consists of a tooth, periodontal membrane and alveolar bone to analyze stress distribution. A canine is selected as a sample tooth to study and various FEM models of different element type are investigated to study the effects of modeling. Results show that a model using a shell element instead of a solid type for a tooth can give a proper result.
