This paper presents the sensing and localization of impact force using the PNN-PZT (Pb(Nb,Ni)O3-Pb(Zr,Ti)O3) piezoelectric fiber with platinum core. In the former study, the cored piezoelectric ceramic fibers have been applied to airflow sensors. In this study, a composite smart board with 4 embedded piezoelectric fibers was fabricated and output signals of the fibers were recorded when impact force was applied to different point of the board by an impact hammer. The time history of the impact force was measured with the signal from the impact hammer. A neural network, trained based on the signals of impact hammer and the piezoelectric fibers when the composite board was hit at seven different point, was used to identify the impact position. The identification results of the impact force at untrained position show the effectiveness of the method using a neural network and embedded piezoelectric fibers for impact localization.
