This paper concerns the suppression of the contact force fluctuation between the pantograph and the overhead contact catenary of high-speed railway vehicles based on the concept of the impedance control. For the better compliance, the mechanical impedance of the pantograph at the contact point is to be reduced in the dominant frequencies of the disturbance which are determined by the span length and the vehicle velocity. To this end, an impedance control law which imitates a pantograph structure with a virtual Maxwell damper is designed to introduce a resonance characteristic tuned to the dominant frequency. Numerical simulations and experiments are presented to show the performance of the proposed control strategy.
