The analysis method is presented for gas foil journal bearings (GFB) with the "true" preload by which the rotor is forced to be squeezed in state of assembly. Bearing component experiments are conducted to compare bearing characteristics to the analysis, such as load capacity, stiffness and damping. Additionally, a test rotor supported on GFB is operated and analyzed to investigate its vibrational behavior. Good agreements are found between analytical and experimental results. And some new knowledge about effects of the preload on GFB is acquired.
