In this study, a high efficiency wide-gap-applicable flux-path control type magnetic bearing is proposed. It has homopolar type rotors with a permanent magnet between them. The stators are composed of the bias circuit component and the electromagnets component. The bias component generates bias magnetic fluxes by the strong neodymium permanent magnets, while the electromagnets component generates control fluxes by the electromagnets. It is feasible to reduce the energy consumption, because the control fluxes don’t act directly on the homopolar rotors, but can change the flux paths of the bias fluxes. The control forces are generated by the imbalance of the bias fluxes between the rotor and the stators. The experimental setup is made and the basic characteristics of the ultra-wide-gap magnetic bearing are tested. Even though the wide air gap of 30mm, the results show a highly stable levitation.
