An optimal planning method is proposed for designing gas turbine cogeneration systems in consideration of the influence of equipment capacities on performance characteristics. Equipment capacities and utility maximum contract demands are determined so as to minimize the annual total cost in consideration of annual system operational strategies expressed by continuous variables expressing energy flow rates and by binary variables expressing on/off status of operation of equipment. This optimal planning problem is formulated as a mixed-integer bilinear programming one, and it is solved by the method combining a relaxation linearization technique with a branch and bound algorithm for finding a global solution. Through numerical case studies, the proposed method is compared with the one using the general solver for a mixed integer nonlinear programming problem and the one formulated as a mixed integer linear programming problem using the simplified model of equipment performance characteristics, and the validity and effectiveness of the proposed method are verified.
