It is known that the mechanical behavior of composite materials is strongly influenced by not only shape of the macroscopic region but also shape and properties of the micro region. In this study, we propose a multi-scale optimization method which determines the shape of the periodic microstructures. The method is consisted of two-step optimization. At first, the material properties of the macrostructures are optimized. The optimization is performed by setting design variables as elastic constants and setting objective functions and constraints according to the design purpose. Next, the shape of microstructures is determined to identity the material properties of the macrostructures, which the inverse homogenization method and the H1 gradient method. Through numerical calculation examples, we confirmed the effectiveness of shape optimization of microstructure by inverse homogenization method.
