Wire rope has high tensile strength and rich flexibility because of its complex structure. Therefore, wire rope is now used in various products such as crane and elevator. However, wire rope also has a problem that it is difficult to inspect inside of the rope and several accidents caused by the rope rupture have been occurred. Although fatigue test has been done to grasp the life of the wire rope, it takes a high cost and we cannot know the inside state such as tensile stress during the test. Finite element analysis is also done, but operation load would be very heavy if we use the full FE model. The purpose of this investigation is to grasp the inside state of the wire rope, by the finite element analysis using a simplified FE model, and reveal the fracture tendency. In order to make the simplified model, we perform the radial direction compression test of a strand and wire rope and measure the material characteristics.
