Flow induced orientational change of 0.5 wt% xanthan gum solution, 3 wt% hydroxypropyl cellulose solution and 7 wt% hydroxypropyl cellulose solution in a planar channel with an abrupt expansion were investigated. Flow induced alignment structure of the polymers after an abrupt expansion was strongly affected with the difference in form of polymers, i.e, temporal alignment structure change was corresponding to the elongational flow field generated after the expansion in the case of rigid polymer with relatively little interaction between molecules.
