A novel blood pump with magnetically levitated impeller has been developed to recover cardiac function of acute heart failure patients. The pump assists patients' heart and the impeller's rotational speed are changed synchronized with heart beat in order to treat patients' heart. In this study, motor stators of different magnetic materials, electromagnetic soft iron (SUY-1), sintered magnetic material (EU-53), and powder magnetic core (EU-69), were compared to improve the motor performance. The stator of EU-69 showed the best performance of three and improved power consumption from 10.7 W to 5.5 W and energy efficiency from 39 % to 69 %, compared to SUY-1 which was used for the prototype pump, at a rotational speed of 1800 rpm and a load torque of 20 mNm. Hemocompatibility of the device was examined by hemolysis tests. Results of hemolysis tests of the device are comparable they of Mixflow (JMS CO., LTD.).
