In recent years, nuclear safety and nuclear emergencies have attracted increasing attention from the public and regulatory authorities. The emergency planning zone (EPZ) division of nuclear power plants is important in case of a nuclear emergency. Generally, the area of the EPZ is determined by comparing the estimated off-site personal doses. This method is based on the accident source terms along with their intervention levels. The NUREG-0396 report proposes a novel method of calculating the radius of EPZ on the basis of the consequences of a full accident spectrum considering probability weighting, and this method has been widely adopted. Simultaneously, another method is suggested in which the individual radius of the EPZ can be calculated based on the consequences of each accident separately. Accordingly, the final area of the EPZ can be identified by the probabilityweighted average of the radius for each accident in the previous step. In this study, the rationality of these two methods of dividing the EPZ of a nuclear power plant is mathematically analyzed. The applicability and equivalency of the methods are also discussed.
