Fires can be one of the dominant contributors to the overall NPP risk. The Nuclear Risk Research Center (NRRC) of the Central Research Institute of Electric Power Industry (CRIEPI) assists the Japanese nuclear power industry by developing and employing modern methods of Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA). Consistent with its objectives, the NRRC has developed the Fire PRA Guide to provide the nuclear power industry in Japan a consistent methodology and supporting data to prepare Fire PRAs. The guide builds upon the practical experience and lessons learned from conducting Fire PRAs in the United States. The methodology and data presented in the guide take advantage of the work that has been previously completed in the United States and in other countries. It uses NUREG/CR6850 as a starting point but deviates from it by including the experience of PRA practitioners who have used NUREG/CR6850, as well as the results of research and methodological developments that have been completed since the publication of that report in 2005. This guide will support the Japanese nuclear industry to develop fire PRAs. It may also be useful to other organizations around the world that wish to use a guide that is an update of NUREG/CR-6850. The NRRC expects that the results of Japanese fire PRAs will be used to support risk-informed decision making regarding fire protection and plant safety.
