The gear unit design are getting more and more complex (having several geared stages), and must be design to limited built in environment. Also the position, vertically or horizontally mounted, of the unit can be variable. Due to these facts a conventional wet sump lubrication system has limited possibility to fulfil all operational needs or just with some major compromises. Our study is concentrating on an intelligent lubrication system, consisting electrically driven pumps and special components, to provide adapted flow for all oil consumers, gears and bearings at any operational points. These systems are not just resulting improved operation, also yielding less drag and mechanical losses and optimized thermal balance, so more efficient gear unit can contribute to vehicle level fuel economy
